JOHN MASCARO’ S PHOTO QUIZ
ANSWER
From page 17
The hole in this collegiate track field was caused by the hammer throw. For those of you who do not have a track field, they are quite interesting to maintain. In addition to track meets on the running track, the grass portions of these fields host events such as the javelin throw, the shot put, the discus, and the hammer throw as shown here. The hammer consists of two steel balls connected with a steel chain with total weight of 16 pounds. The winner of the event is the athlete who throws the hammer the greatest distance while ensuring they stay inside a sevenfoot-diameter circle. The hammer can be launched over 200 feet from the athlete and leave quite an impression on the turfgrass landing area. According
to Irish legend, the history of the hammer throw dates back more than 4,000 years to around 2,000 BC when Cuchulainn threw a chariot wheel an enormous distance at the Tailteann Games in Tara, Ireland.
