ACCELERATE

Above: Employees and members of the community celebrate Young Powersports XL’ s grand opening in August 2023. Right: Young Powersports XL has 89 employees, including brand managers and specialized technicians that specialize in specific brands and models.
The layout also aligns with OEM preferences, many of which want their brands in designated areas, even next to competition, for comparison purposes.
In addition to Young XL’ s extensive inventory and large showroom space, Gailey says the dealership tries to make it a welcoming place to more than just enthusiasts.
“ Part of the vision for consolidating three stores, was we wanted to make something more than just a store. We wanted something that would give a unique community feel,” says Gailey.
Customers are first greeted by a large area with a 75− foot- high water tower, projecting a small- town appeal. Inside sits a Daily Rise Coffee shop, a Utah- based independent coffee retailer that leases space inside the dealership. The first Saturday of every month, Young XL holds a‘ Cars and Coffee’ event in the morning, where the car community can join enthusiasts for food, music, games, and prizes.
Until recently, Young XL featured a barbershop and nail salon inside the dealership but took those two amenities away and pivoted toward a more family- centric experience.
“ We took out the nail and barbershop space, and instead we’ re going to have a kids’ experience. It’ s still being developed, but doing something that kids can look forward to,” Gailey adds.“ That’ s one issue we found with nails and haircuts. It was great for mom and dad, but then you have kids running all over the place, and it’ s hard for them to be able to enjoy those places, so we’ re going to push all our chips in on the kids’ area and make that cool for them.”
Young XL also helps its customers by streamlining the sales process to eliminate confusion or uncertainties. Gailey says a recurring issue he had with dealerships as a consumer was the inexperience and lack of knowledge some dealers had about certain products. Too often, he encountered general sales associates selling vehicles they weren’ t familiar with.
“ We wanted to offer a unique experience, especially when it comes to the brands themselves. One of the biggest challenges that I’ ve dealt with as a powersports customer for a lot of years was that you go and talk to somebody, and if you got a sales associate or someone who wasn’ t part of the world that you played in, you’ re kind of just out of luck.”
With such a large inventory at Young XL, Gailey says it’ s nearly impossible for sales associates to be experts on every vehicle in the store. To combat this, he deploys what he calls brand managers, who are essentially experts that specialize exclusively in one or two brands. So, if you want to shop for vehicles or compare products, you’ ve got experts who understand each vehicle’ s unique features, what rebates and programs are available, and certain differences within the inventory.
Young XL also has specialized technicians to provide maintenance to specific vehicles and brands. A Powersports Business 2024 Best in Class award winner for its service department, Young Powersports XL houses a large area to hold machines ready for pickup with more than 20 bays for technicians.
The service team comprises professionals who are provided with training
opportunities, and techs regularly attend manufacturer certification courses, ensuring that at least one expert mechanic is available for every type of machine.
But perhaps the biggest contribution Young XL provides isn’ t to its customers, but to its community outside the dealership. Young Powersports has been instrumental in its charitable efforts and community outreach— especially to the area’ s youth.
“ We have a nonprofit that started in 2007 that’ s given over $ 7 million back to kids in need, and right now we’ re averaging about $ 1 million a year contributed between our auto and our powersports stores.” Gailey adds that the dealership group has also fed 42,000 kids through its pantry packs program— Ziplock bags of food that its employees and family members put together.
“ Unfortunately, we have a need in our local community where kids go home hungry on the weekends,” he remarks.“ These little pantry packs give the kids a way to eat and support themselves when the school systems can’ t over the weekends.”
Young Powersports also launched the KIND Fund, an initiative that focuses on providing children in need with clothing and other essential resources. Since starting the fund in 2022, the initiative has helped clothe 6,800 kids with more than $ 1 million worth of clothing.
Gailey adds that Young XL wants to continue its efforts in bringing the greater Centerville- area public together, both through charitable work and community events. The team is currently kicking around some ideas to fill its courtyard space, with a possible powersports vehicle drive- in movie concept being floated around. But regardless of what’ s next, it’ s apparent that the dealership wants to be known more as a destination, and not strictly a place to purchase machines.
“ We want to grow this place more as a community spot. We’ re just looking for more community experiences. Yes, it costs a little bit of money, but by getting people here and doing the right thing, it all comes back around eventually,” Gailey says.“ I think if you just take care of people, the business side of things will take care of itself.”
