The welcomed snowfall intensified our group ’ s excitement , and the mood was light as we took to the trails for a full-day ride . First we rode a ditch adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway into town for gas .
While paying for our liters , a lone Arctic Cat quickly bounded toward the filling station . Removing his helmet , local rider and cargo ship captain Kirk MacDonald enthusiastically introduced himself and shared his plans to take us across Cape Breton into the heights of the Sugarloaf Mountain Wilderness Area . If all went well , we ’ d be having lunch at the remote Big Intervale Fishing Lodge , which locals call Salmon Camp .
We hit the Silver Dart Trail , named for Bell ’ s historic airplane and , a few turns later , found ourselves in a familiar scene – freeway-width trails rolling up and down the forest floor . The sizable drifts from the yesterday were now larger , even softer and surrounded by millions of snowladen pines . Floyd , Kirk and I took every opportunity to hit the tallest jumps , and everybody got their daily workouts exhuming buried machines .
Back on the gas , we zoomed across the landscape and into the village of North East Margaree , where the trails soon closed in tighter . Our
