All of the fresh powder hung from trees ( left ), license plates ( above ) and the author ’ s riding gear ( above right ). Below is an image of the Pig And Whistle trail rest stop . over a steep valley with a tiny stream winding far below in the valley . We could see for miles , but were careful to avoid stepping too close toward the snow-packed edge .
Back on the trail , we headed back to the farm . I enjoyed blasting through more drifts and staring at the gaping valleys and steep hills along the way . We parked outside the creatively named Pig And Whistle rest shelter for a quick break at twilight , and then maintained a good pace as we rode back toward the farm with 147 kilometers added to the odometers at day ’ s end .
The group had already proven to be amusing and aggressive , but nothing accelerates bonding like a multicourse homemade dinner around a big table . As our bodies adjusted to room temperature , Jan and Glen swept in from the kitchen with a succession of steaming vegetable lentil soup , roasted ham and scalloped potatoes , followed by a desert of apple and cinnamon crisp with ice cream , coffee and chocolates . Jan and Glen told us about their two 20-something daughters , Kay and Clare , both living in Scotland , and shared their best stories from taking a rotating series of strangers into their home . They never know what or who will show up . We stayed up late , but arose early to brewing coffee , a king ’ s breakfast and , most delightfully , a foot of freshly fallen snow .
