KEEPING UP WITH CONSUMER DEMAND
For my first time putting together our annual Technology Guide , I found it quite remarkable just how many different POS systems are out there . Even after working in retail for a good chunk of my life , I knew that there were a few different options , I just never realized how many . How do you choose just one system for your store ? Especially with all of the different features that come with some of the POS systems , it sounds like a big task . We try to make it as easy as possible for liquor store owners to upgrade or install new technology into their stores with our 2024 Technology Buyer ’ s Guide so it ’ s a little less daunting .
It ’ s also helpful to know how and where your customers are buying their alcohol beverages to aid in your search for new technology . The SmartCommerce Omnichannel Report , issued in June 2024 , highlights dynamic shifts in purchasing behaviors for groceries and other CPG goods .
The report states that the majority of shoppers ( 64 %) still prefer to purchase alcohol beverages entirely in-store , with 16 % using a combination of online and in-store , 11 % opting for online with in-store / curbside pickup and 9 % choosing online with delivery . Despite the slower shift in the adult drinks category , the trendlines toward online purchasing is undeniable and likely to follow the trajectory of other CPG goods .
“ Given these evolving consumer preferences ( and expectations ), it ’ s critical for liquor store retailers to embrace e-commerce technology and establish a more robust online presence , beyond just having a website ,” notes Don Knapp , EVP of partnerships at SmartCommerce . “ It ’ s true that online shopping for beverage alcohol products is more challenging because of all the legalities and restrictions , but the days where loyal shoppers will swing by the same storefront and chat up the clerk are numbered . Shoppers want their beverage of choice , their brand of choice , as fast and affordably as possible .”
