FIELD OF THE YEAR SCHOOLS AND PARKS SOFTBALL
I tell people all the time that our program was built on my student ’ s passion and work ethic . Every year , our students come into the classroom and are reinvigorated to be better than the year before . They are never satisfied with their work ; they want to do better each year . What is truly so special about it is that it ’ s not for any accolade or award ; it is the shared vision of the Brentsville Turfgrass Program to provide the best playing surface possible , no matter what . Through this vision , our students are exploring new and innovative ways of sports field management that continue to change and grow . I have the greatest students in the world who truly are the future of the sports field management industry . I feel lucky to be able to see that every single day in my classroom .
SFM : What does this win say about your program ? And what would you like to say about your students and their effort ? Miller : To be completely honest , this win shows how our student ’ s love and passion for their work truly is the best in the country . There are so many incredible professionals , students and volunteers who share this same love of sports field management , but our students have set the standard of going above and beyond in every aspect of managing this field . This win shows that our students ’ dedication to not only providing the safest playing surface possible but also their creativity is absolutely out of this world . What they accomplished at Brentsville Softball Park I have never before seen on a softball field — from their moisture management to the out-of-this-world mowing patterns .
SFM : What are / were the biggest challenges you faced with Brentsville Softball Park , and how have you approached those challenges ? Miller : I believe that the biggest challenge we faced throughout the season was Mother Nature and dealing with the different climates throughout the season . We started our season in February , when the average temperatures ranged from 30 to 45 degrees . Then we finished the season with the state semifinals in June , when the temperature that day was in the upper 90s . The challenge is to ensure that our playing surface plays the exact same way from the first day of tryouts to the state semifinal game . We are a high school where certain aspects of our facility are out of our hands . We did not have irrigation until the middle of the season because we were not permitted to turn it on . We face these challenges with an open mind , and try our best to collaborate on a solution that leads to us achieving our goal of providing the safest playing surface possible . It has been an incredible adventure with the limited resources to develop solutions that truly have a positive impact on our student-athletes .
SFM : This is another in a string of accolades for your program and your students . You and other high school educators in your state are leading the next generation of sports field managers and earning national recognition . What is the key to getting other states to implement similar sports field management / turfgrass management programs and curriculum ? And what is your hope for the future of turfgrass education overall ?
