ACCESSING THE ARCHIVES
In this retrospective , we examine historic issues of SportsTurf magazine , predecessor to SportsField Management magazine . In this edition of Accessing the Archives , we turn back the clock to 1992 .
As mentioned previously , in 1991 , the publication had changed its name to Golf & Sports Turf and ended its affiliation with the Sports Turf Managers Association . However , the January 1992 issue was the last to include “ Golf ” in the title , and by February 1992 , the magazine was once again the official publication of STMA . Editor Bruce Shank said the magazine would “ refocus its energies on building the foundation for the rest of the sports turf industry .”
The January 1992 issue reflected the shift back to sports-field-related topics , as it led with an article titled “ Research Proves Turf Can Grow in Dome Stadiums ,” which detailed efforts by Dr . James Beard and fellow researchers to test the ability of turfgrass to grow in a dome stadium . “ Both the test results and the soccer players gave certain grass and lighting combinations full approval . This opens the doors for dome stadiums to consider natural grass events ,” the article stated .
The January issue also highlighted Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis and profiled George Toma , who had been named the SportsTurf magazine Man of the Year .
STMA ’ s priorities were outlined by STMA President Dr . Gil Landry , Jr ., in the March 1992 issue , and included support and development of education and seminars for Little League , youth soccer , the American Federation of High School Associations ; establishment of chapter development standards ; implementation of five regional institutes ; and work on an ASTM committee to develop standards pertaining to playing surfaces of recreational fields .
1992 marked other transitions for STMA as well , as Landry outlined in the May issue that the board was transitioning to a permanent executive director and / or association management company . By July , the STMA board had approved the services of a new management firm — Smith , Bucklin & Associates , Chicago — and also appointed Bret Kelsey as STMA executive director to “ direct the operational , human resource and long-term planning objectives of the organization .”
