Ski-Doo One-Piece Sport Medium Windshield
BY MARK ROSACKER
There are few things more exciting than bringing home a new snowmobile and starting the process of making it your own. And for many of us, choosing the right accessories is almost as much fun as riding the sled itself.
One of the first things I look at is the windshield. There’ s no denying that the ultra-low, almost nonexistent windshields found on many new snowmobiles look great. They give a sled an aggressive, sporty appearance that I like. But once the temperature drops, looks don’ t keep me comfortable, and I don’ t want every ride to turn into a battle with the wind.
At the same time, I’ m not always ready to bolt a giant touring windshield onto a sporty sled. That’ s what made Ski- Doo’ s One-Piece Sport Medium Windshield so appealing. At 15 inches tall, it falls right in the middle of those two extremes. The goal with this windshield is pretty straightforward: add meaningful wind protection without affecting the sleek appearance of the sled. And after installing and riding with it, I’ d say Ski-Doo came pretty close to that target.
The windshield uses a one-piece design with integrated side deflectors, giving it a clean, cohesive appearance rather than looking like an accessory that was added as an afterthought. I also liked that the design works with the handguards without creating interference. That may sound like a small detail, but it’ s exactly the kind of thing I look for in an accessory. I don’ t want to gain wind protection only to create another problem somewhere else.
OUT ON THE TRAIL
Unfortunately, we didn’ t have the opportunity to put the windshield through a true deep-freeze test. So I won’ t claim that it’ s the ultimate solution for extreme cold-weather riding. If that is your typical riding condition then a higher shield is going to serve you better.
What we did get, however, were some good opportunities to ride with it on cooler days, and that’ s where the windshield impressed me. The additional protection was noticeable. It took some of the wind off the rider without creating the enclosed, bulky feeling you can get with a much taller windshield. For the conditions we experienced, it provided plenty of protection while still allowing the sled to retain the sporty character I wanted.
