SKI-DOO: ROTAX 850 E-TEC TURBO R
Ski-Doo’ s factory turbo system is built around the Rotax 850 E-TEC platform. Like the Polaris system, it uses exhaust energy to drive a turbocharger that compresses intake air so the engine can produce power more effectively at elevation.
At its core is Rotax’ s 849cc E-TEC direct-injected twin-cylinder engine, supplemented by additional boost injectors in the intake tract. This is a central part of how Ski-Doo manages fuel delivery in a boosted 2-stroke or( nearly all) of their high-performance 2T applications. The current Turbo R engine sits at the top of Ski-Doo’ s factory horsepower lineup.
One of the defining features of the newest Turbo R is its water-injection system on applicable low-elevation models. Rather than relying on a traditional air-to-air intercooler, the system injects water to help control intake temperatures during sustained highload operation. Cooler intake temperatures improve charge density and help maintain consistent performance under boost. Viewed purely as engineering solutions, both systems rely on the same fundamental principle— using exhaust energy to compress incoming air— but each manufacturer takes a slightly different approach. Regardless of brand, modern factory turbocharging has transformed mountain riding. Much of the high-elevation performance that riders now take for granted simply wouldn’ t be possible without it.
