Coleman built over 30,000 Skiroules for 1971, a brand record never reached again, plus 2,300 additional rolling chassis for Ariens sleds. Industry estimates made Coleman the number six manufacturer behind Bombardier, Arctic, Giffen( Moto-Ski, Boa-Ski, and Sno- Prince), Conroy( Sno * Jet), and Polaris.
But at the end of the industry’ s biggest-ever sales year, with an estimated 495,000 sleds retailed worldwide, Skiroule had 13,000 unsold machines and was essentially tied for the third-worst carryover in the industry. Coleman’ s unique distribution method was a major reason for this inventory disaster. Dealers picked up sleds from a warehouse as needed rather than receiving truckloads for showroom inventory. But with only five warehouses in the entire U. S., including just one in the east and one more in the upper Midwest, this was a massive mistake. It was one of the reasons Coleman lost a million dollars per year on Skiroule during its ownership.
Still, the future looked bright for Coleman and its green sleds. The rakish new 1972 Skiroules rocked the sport and industry with eye-catching styling and advanced features. The matching apparel was simply beyond anything else available at the time. But Coleman managed the company poorly, continuing the disastrous distribution strategy while struggling through a costly production strike and failing to effectively address serious engineering problems with the sexy new sleds. Industry-wide retail sales were slowing rapidly, and Skiroule suffered disproportionately. Houle had bailed out at the right time, and Skiroule was gone before the end of the 1970s.
