Arctic Cat Thundercat
Muscle / Performance
Yes, we know... The Thundercat has been around for a while. That’ s also exactly why it deserves to be here. While the snowmobile industry has spent years chasing lighter platforms, new electronics, and increasingly specialized chassis designs, the Thundercat continues to make a wonderfully simple argument: Sometimes you just want a lot of engine. Its 998cc turbocharged 4-stroke Triple produces a claimed 200 horsepower, making it the muscle sled of this group. But there’ s more to the appeal than straight-line acceleration. The 2027 version gets Arctic Cat’ s G8 display, electronic power steering, and on the 146-inch version, the Cross-Action rear suspension. That gives this big Cat considerably more versatility than its bruteforce reputation might suggest. Is it the newest or lightest sled on the snow? Nope. Is it still an absolute blast to ride? Definitely. Some machines earn their place on a Top 10 list because they’ re technologically revolutionary. The Thundercat earned its place because it’ s just fun.

Everyday Trail / Best Value
Not every great snowmobile needs to be expensive or brutally fast. The Polaris 650 INDY XC 137 is the sled we’ d point toward the rider who simply wants to spend their winter putting miles on a snowmobile for an affordable price. Its 650cc Patriot 2-stroke has enough power to make the ride entertaining without becoming excessive, and the 137-inch Matryx platform provides a useful balance of cornering agility, flotation, and stability. The XC suspension is designed for real-world trail riding, where conditions can range from smooth groomed stretches to miles of bumps and rough corners. At 495 lb dry, it also avoids the feeling that you’ re wrestling with a heavyweight machine when the trail gets tight. There are faster sleds on this list. There are more technologically exotic sleds too. But that’ s not why the XC 650 is here. It’ s here because this is the kind of snowmobile that makes sense for a huge percentage of riders. It’ s straightforward, capable, and easy to love.
