Brute, Mercury Trail Twister, Northway Interceptor, and Evinrude Skimmer. All of these newer models were smaller, lighter, more powerful, much more nimble, and generally better riding than the Ski Whiz that had been essentially suspended in time for three seasons.
The well-advertised 1975 Ski Whiz pre-season sale offered cash rebates or free Massey Ferguson snowmobile merchandise as sales incentives. As the pre-season progressed, price reductions were backed by full-color, full-page ads in major snowmobile magazines. By Christmas, the $ 1,430 444ST was available for about $ 1,150. But they were hard to sell even at these reduced prices.
END OF AN ERA
In October 1974, Massey Ferguson and Scorpion quietly reached an agreement for Scorpion to build sleds to Massey’ s specifications starting with the 1976 model year. These sleds were basically Scorpions fitted with dual headlights and Massey Ferguson decals. The Ski Whiz was a goner, and Massey’ s days in the snowmobile business were numbered.
Massey Ferguson had bet that building a rugged, high quality machine without worrying about performance would bring success. It stuck to that thinking, being the only major manufacturer that never got involved in snowmobile racing. But ignoring performance turned out to be a fatal decision in the increasingly speed- and fun-conscious snowmobile world of the 1970s.
