Why do they prefer to perform their own landscape and lawn care on their property ?
Control ! The majority cited “ control over the appearance and health of my property ” ( 77.8 %), “ personal satisfaction from seeing immediate results ” ( 77.6 %), “ physical exercise and being outdoors ” ( 75.3 %), “ cost savings compared to hiring professionals ” ( 69.5 %) and “ enjoyment of hands-on activities ” 53.8 %.
What is the biggest challenge of maintaining one ’ s own property ?
Time ! The highest percentage of respondents cited “ lack of time to adequately maintain everything ” with “ weather conditions ,” “ health issues ,” “ cost of supplies ” and “ insufficient knowledge ” being other top challenges .
Among respondents who predominantly maintain their own property , the majority ( 61 %) said they would be most likely to hire a professional if a tree on their property needed pruning or trimming for health or aesthetic reasons . Fifty-three percent said they would hire a professional for irrigation system installation .
Hire it out
Among respondents who hire professional landscapers for their landscaping and lawn care needs , the majority hire professionals for lawn maintenance tasks such as mowing and trimming ( 57.4 %) and lawn care applications ( 52.1 %). Forty-eight percent said they currently hire professionals for their tree care needs .
A slight majority ( 56.4 %) use only one professional landscaper / company for all their lawn care and landscaping needs . How do you find a landscape industry professional to hire ? Word of mouth ! 75 % said they use recommendations from friends or family . Trailing far behind word of mouth were online search ( 34 %), social media ( 31 %), through local retailers ( 17 %) and advertisements / flyers ( 15 %).
What do you look for in a landscaping professional ?
Quality ! “ Quality of work based on previous projects or reviews ” ( 86 %), “ price / affordability ” ( 64 %), “ recommendations from people I trust ” 60.9 %, “ availability of services I need ” ( 59 %), and “ customer service / responsiveness ” ( 49 %).

The majority of respondents who hire landscape professionals for their lawn care needs reported that their experience has been very good to excellent ( 76 %).
