We recently surveyed a wide range of consumers who own and care for their own property . And the survey results tell interesting stories for pro landscapers and equipment dealers . The majority of respondents indicated that they or a family member are primarily responsible for the lawn maintenance tasks .
Ninety-two percent live in single-family homes and 100 % of respondents to the survey have a lawn , shrubs , gardens , water features or undeveloped land where they live .

The survey respondents own a wide range of property sizes , with 17.2 % less than ¼ acre and about 25 % greater than 2 acres .
In addition to lawn areas , landscape beds and natural areas , other popular property / site features and amenities include patios ( 48.5 %), wooden decks ( 44.8 %), fire pits / fireplaces ( 35.1 %), composite decking ( 25.9 %), fruit / vegetable gardens ( 24.7 %), paver / hardscape outdoor living rooms ( 20.7 %), pools ( 18.8 %), ponds / water features ( 17.8 %) and outdoor kitchens ( 11.9 %).
More than 98 % of all survey respondents indicated they have prior experience using outdoor power equipment .
DIY it
Of those who responded that they maintain their own lawn / property , nearly 92 % do their own mowing and trimming ; 76 % do their own cleaning ( gutter cleaning , pressure washing , window washing , etc .); 75 % their own tree and shrub care ; 72 % leaf and snow removal ; 67 % do their own lawn care applications ( fertilizer , herbicides , pesticides , etc .); and 43 % do their own landscape design / construction / installation .
