Author Tom Kaiser ( center ) and his new-found snowmobiling friends .
I flew into the port city of Halifax , a major center for finance , education , the Department of National Defense , fishing and crossocean transportation .
From there , I joined members of the Snowmobilers Association of Nova Scotia , who graciously trucked bodies and sleds 350 kilometers ( about 220 miles ) north over the Canso Causeway and into the hilly landscape of Cape Breton Island to ride in and around the Cape Breton Highlands . With more elevation than the rest of the Nova Scotia , the Highlands looked to offer the most promising riding in the region .
After four days of exploration , as well as surprisingly excellent snowmobile conditions , we found Nova Scotia to be a beautiful oceanic outpost with trails that must be groomed by the gods . Making the excursion even more remarkable , the area is populated by a diverse range of residents — seemingly more of a melting pot than anyplace I ’ ve visited in the United States .
