Make The Most Of It

BY JOHN T . PRUSAK / EDITOR
What are your most memorable family holidays over the years ? I would guess that the first ones that pop to mind are the occasions when a few things went wrong .
For instance , I ’ ll always remember the Christmas of 1983 . It was bitterly cold ( minus 31 degrees Fahrenheit overnight ) and super windy , with about two feet of snow on the ground in the Minneapolis area – a rarity this far south in Minnesota . My parents hosted Christmas Eve that year . At one point it appeared we were headed for a big slumber party with aunts , uncles , cousins and grandparents because one car wouldn ’ t start and two others were stuck in snow drifts ... and then the power went off for a short period !
It all turned out OK , but the time spent dealing with the situations we were all facing together burned permanent memories into my brain . Christmas of 1982 or ’ 81 ? I ’ m guessing if I looked back on some photos , I might be able to conjure up some sort of memories , maybe . But 1983 is still right there on the tip of my brain , so-to-speak .
The same situation happens with travel – and , specifically , snowmobile travel . The Saturday afternoon ride when everything goes as planned and “ nothing ” happens is obviously a joyous affair . In general , “ uneventful ” is about the best we can hope for in life ’ s many adventures .
Yet when a ride does become eventful , for whatever reason , as long as it doesn ’ t become too serious it usually turns into a lifelong memory and a story you ’ ll share over and over again with family and friends . That was the case when my coworker Mark and I had trouble making it over a mountain pass in the Colorado story featured in this issue . Or when a desperate search for a specific lodging facility led to a chance encounter with interesting strangers in Jay Savignac ’ s New England story .
As always , we ’ re hoping this latest issue of Snow Goer ’ s Great Escapes encourages you to plan a trip to someplace new while living life to its fullest . And we hope everything goes according to plan on your trip – honest !
But if there are a few hiccups along the way or challenges to overcome , that ’ s OK too . Either way , our lives are a collection of adventures and memories . Go make some .
