18 a large hillside , with several fumaroles emitting warm vapors and keeping it free of snow . The overlook afforded us a scenic view of both lakes as well as the Big Obsidian Flow and Paulina Peak beyond .
We skirted the south side of the lakes and returned to Paulina Lake Lodge for another tasty lunch . The place was packed with an overflow crowd of Saturday riders , who welcomed us warmly as the two visitors from faraway Wisconsin .
After finishing our feast , we backtracked a few miles to resume our circuit around the southern boundary of the national monument , where we reveled in the rollicking twists , turns and elevation changes . The trail was smooth and well-groomed , but that didn ’ t stop us from taking a side excursion down an inviting untracked road we encountered . The deep snow had set up perfectly and made for a fun several miles down and then back to our main route .
We returned to the Ten Mile Sno-Park after racking up more than 60 miles of pleasurable riding . The Lodgepole Dodgers ’ Prinoth tractor was parked outside its garage and available for inspection , which included a photo op in the driver ’ s seat . As the sun began to sink in the west , we loaded up the machines and bid our hosts a fond farewell , complimenting them on the scenic beauty of the area and the excellence of the trails they maintain .
