One of snowmobiling ’ s best features is the ability to visit fantastic places that might otherwise be inaccessible during winter . Nowhere is that more true than in Oregon ’ s hottest riding area , the 86-square mile Newberry National Volcanic Monument . This geologic wonderland , located less than an hour south of the city of Bend , lies within the Deschutes National Forest near the center of the state , encompassing the Paulina Mountains and numerous volcanic features [ see sidebar ].
In two days of outstanding riding under bluebird skies , we experienced wide , smooth trails that cut across open play areas , took us through dense forests dominated by towering pines , past steep waterfalls and high-country lakes and to striking overviews of the impressive volcanic terrain .
