At a recent neighborhood gathering , talk of popular television series available on various subscription services overtook the conversation .

“ Have you guys been watch ‘ Severance ’ on Apple TV +?” one 40-something guy asked . “ The season finale was mind bending !”

“ That was good , but what about ‘ House of the Dragon ’ on HBO Max ?” another neighbor answered , referring to a “ Game Of Thrones ” prequel . Pretty soon , most people at the party were leaning forward and excitedly throwing out their own favorites : “ Tell Me Lies ” on Hulu , “ Peaky Blinders ” on Netflix , “ The Terminal List ” on Amazon Prime , “ Yellowstone ” on Paramount , “ Star Wars : Mandalorian ” on Disney Plus , and beyond .

Finally , one skeptical neighbor broke into the conversation and said , “ Damn , how many subscription services do y ’ all pay for each month ? And how much time do you spend in front of your TV ?!”

“ Well ,” the most self-deprecating guy in the group replied , “ you have to accept the fact that we all have nothing better to do all fall and winter !”

I ’ m not saying that I haven ’ t been hooked by the occasional binge-worthy series : In fact , I was so enthralled with “ Ozark ” that I was considering starting my own drug cartel ( I ’ m kidding , of course ). But I also definitely adhere to the theory that it ’ s more fun to be “ doing ” rather than “ watching .”

Assuming you ’ re a snowmobiler ( which seems likely , considering you ’ re reading this ) “ doing ” in the winter often involves riding sleds somewhere scenic . Sure , some TV shows are interesting , but we all know that they pale in comparison to the excitement of following a groomed white ribbon of snow over the river , through the woods and across the meadows . As snowmobilers , we already know that , but it ’ s still rather easy to let one week tumble into the next

with nothing but the “ boob tube ” to entertain us . Then , before you know it , the glory of winter is melting away . Don ’ t let that happen this winter .

Through repurposing enthralling destination stories from past issues of Snow Goer magazine , Great Escapes is dedicated to encouraging fellow sledheads to get away from the recliner and remote control to make real memories in the real world . The colors might be bright on that 60-inch LED display , but they can ’ t hold a candle to the real kaleidoscope in the great outdoors each winter .
