Lake Pepin – a wide portion of the Mississippi River – is the only place in the area where snowmobilers can safely cross the Mighty Miss on a snow sled , according to guys from the Cliff & Coulee Climbers Snowmobile Club who showed me their trails . A jagged bluff juts out from the Wisconsin side of the lake , and a bluff with softer , smoother features sticks out from Minnesota .
We rode north on the lake from the Lake City Sportsman ’ s Club to Frontenac State Park at the bluff ’ s base . Lake Pepin is quiet in the winter as there weren ’ t many snowmobile tracks and just one ice fishing shack , but in the summer Pepin is a popular boating and sailing destination .
