66 door to Drummond Island .” Drummond Island itself has more than 60 miles of trails that cut twisting paths across the island , and some interesting lakeshores . Riders can visit the famous Marblehead rocky outcropping , or see the shelf rocks that can create some truly unforgettable scenes .
“ Where the waves crash against those flat shelf rocks , the spray goes up in the air and freezes in the air , and it creates ice caves ,” Griffin said . “ These ice caves are can be 10 to 12 feet high in size and 20 to 30 feet long , and you can go down into the ice caves and experience them ” if conditions are right .
“ They don ’ t happen every year ,” Griffin said , “ because you have to have really high winds and open water and 20 below [ temperatures ] in order to get them to happen .”
A ferry take riders , sleds and trucks across the bay and over to Drummond Island , where 66 miles of trails await .
DAY 2 : Three Great Lakes
Starting with the ferry ride back to the mainland , Griffin said he would take visitors north to start day two , traveling up to the wondrous border town of Sault Ste . Marie , where a visitor can view the locks and find the eastern end of Trail 8 that crosses the entire U . P .
Taking Trail 8 west would lead those following Griffin around a bay , and down through Brimley , where a meal at the Silver Creek Bar may be in order . Otherwise if it ’ s still too early for food he ’ d ask the group if they wanted to venture on all the way to the aptly named town of Paradise farther up Trail 8 .
Once there , it ’ s decision time – many in the group might want to make a run out to Tahquamenon Falls – one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi . But if his group had no strong hankering to see the falls Griffin would lead guests farther along Trail 8 east toward Grand Marais .
