ANOTHER MUST SEE : THE PATH TO MACKINAC

In years when conditions are right – meaning cold enough for the bay to safely freeze solid – snowmobilers can follow a path of Christmas trees from the shores in St . Ignace across the Straits of Mackinac out to Mackinac Island for a very special wintertime treat . That ’ s right – the island that doesn ’ t otherwise allow motorized transportation actually invites snowmobiles to visit in the winter and travel some of the paths that are reserved for horse-drawn carriages in the spring , summer and fall . The island can be quite the overrun tourist trap in the summer , but when winter comes the population slips to about 500 hearty souls , and any and all visitors are welcomed with opened arms . Many of the fudge shops and other attractions go dark in the winter , but there are a couple of notable restaurants , bars and hotels that stay open for business .
Snowmobilers can take the ferry to the island in the early winter , until the ice road forms . Once the ice is settled – often not until early February – the path can stay for as little as a couple of days or for a couple of months ; it all depends on the weather and , particularly , the winds that can break up the ice . Check ahead before making your crossing , and stay close to the trees when going to or from the island .
