// MARKET TRENDS
Generational pontoon interest
Innovation , comfort and luxury are key in order to continue appealing to future buyers . Just last year , Harris Boats made ADA-compliant doors standard on almost all of their models to further enable boat ownership and operation to those with specific and unique mobility requirements . This opens the door for many consumers who may not have been able to purchase boats before due to certain disability restrictions .
Currently , Baby Boomers take the stand for the highest percentage of pontoon purchases at 42 % in 2023 , according to Lightspeed data . This generation also has the highest average unit price , spending about $ 57,399 per pontoon . The spending indicates a preference for more premium or fully-featured pontoons within this demographic .
Gen X is a close second in terms of market share , making up 39 % of pontoon purchases last year , the data states . Their average spending is slightly lower than Baby Boomers , at $ 56,627 , which could suggest a slightly different set of preferences or financial priorities compared to the older generation .
While Millennials and Gen Z do represent some pontoon purchases , Baby Boomers and Gen X remain the top buyers , according to Lightspeed ’ s data . This is likely due to higher disposable incomes and possibly greater interest in activities that utilize pontoons .
JENS HOUSLEY
Optimistic for the future
Looking ahead , both Housely and Athmer predict positive growth for the pontoon industry . “ We expect 2024 to be a solid year in the pontoon industry ,” says Housley . “ Manitou is excited to offer our new Explore MAX with Dual Rotax S150 engines , which is uniquely positioned to provide the advantages and features of a dual engine boat at a very competitive price . We have lofty expectations for this new offering in addition to the rest of our 2024 lineup and are excited for spring weather to come !”
Much of Athmer ’ s optimism comes from both the quality of the product Harris Boats produces as well as the experience and support that they provide to consumers . With more inventory for buyers to choose from , the market will be extremely competitive , so innovation and quality will be key to making it out on top .
“ Our expectation is pontoons will continue to grow in the market as they deliver high overall value to the boating consumer ,” predicts Athmer . “ We have seen this over the last 10 + years and have witnessed the growth in volume versus other segments . The pontoon segment will continue to be at historical record levels , even as the market stabilizes post-COVID .”
