“ 2024 has been proven to be a strong start to the year with a renewed excitement from consumers and increased interest at a number of the tier one boat shows we ’ ve attended thus far ,” says Brian Athmer , president of Harris Boats . “ We anticipate the 2024 market to remain consistent with 2023 and normalize demand as we continue to adjust from record years spurred by the COVID boating boom .”

The excitement for pontoons is not surprising . Because of the versatile docking and mooring solutions for boats , pontoons are ideal for recreational activities such as fishing , water skiing and leisurely cruising . As more individuals seek these immersive experiences on the water , the market will only continue to grow .

The impact of COVID-19 on pontoons

The COVID pandemic disrupted the pontoon market as supply chains and construction projects were delayed , Global Market Insights states . As consumers stayed home and outdoor recreational activities were put on hold , demand for pontoons declined .

Although interest in marine activities remains steadfast , it doesn ’ t necessarily mean smooth sailing for pontoon manufacturers . Jens Housley , Global Product Strategy Manager , Manitou , notes that as supply is finally catching up to demand , potential pontoon buyers are taking their time to make sure they choose the boat that ’ s right for them .

“ Now that we are two years removed from the effects of COVID , the supply chain and inventory have stabilized ,” says Housley . “ As with most industries , the marine industry saw a spike in demand in 2022 , leading to an increase in production . As a result , inventories are higher than normal , however demand continues to be strong .”

Despite the slight challenge , Housley still predicts the pontoon market to continue growing . “ The versatility of pontoon boats will continue to improve as manufacturers launch new products which will attract both new and experienced boaters into the pontoon segment ,” he says . “ Combined with the investment in experiences and creating memories with friends and family , boating is poised to grow .”
