Five ways to use AI in your turfgrass job search

By Kerri Day Keller, Ph. D., CPRW
cross all sectors of the economy, artificial intelligence( AI) is reshaping the way business gets done. In the turfgrass industry, AI has revolutionized mowing practices, irrigation systems, disease forecasting, and more. AI is also reshaping how turf professionals find their next job. Using AI tools can give job seekers an edge, just like early-adopter turf professionals who aren’ t afraid to experiment with the newest autonomous mowers, sensor-based soil monitoring, and other new technologies. Here are five ways to use AI to empower your turfgrass job search.

AI-OPTIMIZE YOUR RESUME

While the turfgrass industry remains relationship-driven, job seekers who tailor their application materials for both the human eye and the applicant tracking system( ATS) gain a valuable competitive edge. Use AI tools like ChatGPT to tailor your resume and cover letter for each job posting. While that would have been laborious in the past, AI makes it easy today. Identify keywords from listings— like GPS sprayer experience and data analytics for irrigation— and mirror them in your materials. Using these prompts and the results they generate, you can turn vague bullet points into achievement-focused ones. Instead of“ Managed irrigation,” use an outcomes-based statement like“ Reduced water use by 18 % by utilizing GPS and precision technologies such as ….” and plug in the specific systems you have used.
Not sure how to get started with optimizing your resume and cover letter? Use these prompt engineering tips from Carrie Christiano, author of“ Empower Your Job Search with AI.”
Context: Tell AI its role.“ Act as a seasoned sports field manager reviewing a stack of 50 resumes ….”
Clarity: Tell AI what to analyze.“ Scan the 10 most recent postings for assistant superintendent roles in Texas from the Sports Field Management Association job board ….”
Constraints: Tell AI how you want answers delivered.“ Synthesize the results into a single, three-paragraph summary that highlights the key skills.”
In“ Empower Your Job Search with AI,” Christiano also suggests that using AI as your virtual partner in the job search will only work if you— the human— remain in command. She says that your wisdom, judgment and ethics are the most important part of a virtual partnership. She recommends that job seekers commit to these three rules of thumb:
1. Never Trust, Always Verify: AI-generated results can sound very convincing, but they can also“ hallucinate,” which means they will confidently make up facts and sources. Always treat AI-generated answers as a starting point, not a final fact, especially when you ask for market data and employer information.
2. Find Your Voice: Don’ t let your resume and cover letter become generic and start sounding like everyone else’ s. Never just copy and paste AI’ s outputs without adding your own personality, unique stories, and human polish.
3. Keep It Confidential: Treat AI tools as public forums. Do not paste in highly sensitive data, confidential performance reviews, or personally identifiable information. Anonymize your data. For example, use“ X Sports Complex” instead of the actual name of the facility to protect the privacy of you and other employees.

SHARPEN YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

Move beyond exchanging business cards and establish a strong presence on a platform like LinkedIn to enhance your personal brand. AI tools can help you draft a stronger headline and summary that highlight essential people-management skills, as well as turf-tech fluency with GIS platforms, drones, mowing robotics, sensors, and more. Use AI to identify certifications and skills to spotlight based on target job descriptions. Then detail your credentials from SFMA, GCSA, IA or other associations— as well as other relevant training— throughout your LinkedIn profile.

RESEARCH TRENDS AND EMPLOYERS

Use AI-assisted research to illustrate your professional expertise in your cover letter and subsequent interviews. Write and speak knowledgeably about industry trends related to autonomous moving, water-saving pressure, labor-shortage solutions, and more to showcase your awareness of where the industry is headed. Dig deeper and more specifically to learn about an organization’ s maintenance philosophy, recent renovations, or tech adoption by searching press releases and websites via AI to develop sharper interview talking points.

AI-POWER YOUR INTERVIEW PRACTICE

Feeling out of practice for interviewing? Use AI to generate likely interview questions based on a specific job posting and then practice concise, confident answers. Use the AI-powered features of your favorite video-conferencing platform to record
your answers, as well as your body language. Playback recordings and analyze the transcripts to identify performance improvements based on job descriptions and hiring manager personas. Feeling really brave? Try conversing with a chatbot to roleplay interview scenarios using a mix of behavioral questions(“ Tell me about a time you managed a labor shortage”), technical questions( irrigation scheduling logic), and curveballs that may get thrown at you(“ Summarize your agronomy philosophy in three words”).

NETWORK AND FOLLOW UP AT SCALE

Draft personalized outreach and informational interview requests using AI tools such as Grammarly to speed up writing while keeping messages authentic and concise. Use AI to help follow up professionally after industry events such as SFMA Conference and chapter events without losing the personal touch. Word of warning— be careful and don’ t over-automate. AI should accelerate outreach, not replace genuine relationship building.

AS YOU NEAR THE FINISH LINE

While much about AI remains uncharted, these job search tips offer solid first steps into this new territory. Above all, make sure your use of AI results in accurate and truthful enhancements to your resume and job applications. Don’ t force keywords or information not backed by your experience. Hiring managers can quickly spot a padded resume. If needed, use AI-generated suggestions to strategize how to build your skills, not just borrow the language. In the end, authenticity rules in a relationship-oriented industry like turfgrass. Choose the right AI tool, back it with verifiable evidence, and gain an edge as you take the next step in your turfgrass career.
