The October issue of SportsTurf detailed the removal of synthetic turf — and installation of a natural grass field — at Kansas City ’ s Arrowhead Stadium . Both Arrowhead and neighboring Kauffman Stadium had been built in the 1970s and both featured synthetic turf . But when faced with the prospect of replacing the frayed carpet , Arrowhead opted for natural grass ( Kauffman would follow suit the next year ). The artificial turf was ripped out and new irrigation , drainage and communication systems were installed , along with a new bermudagrass playing surface . “ Having a grass field means a lot to me ,” said Head Groundskeeper Andre Bruce .
Beyond the heavy focus on the World Cup in 1994 , other issues of SportsTurf that year focused on infield renovation , mowing practices , seeding , compaction , renovation , irrigation , drainage , field safety and overseeding .
1994 concluded with a profile of Doubleday Field at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown , N . Y .,
and Grounds Superintendent Joseph Harris . The field debuted all the way back in 1919 , and the article detailed the storied history of the field throughout the decades . By the time of the 1994 article , the field was being used
for baseball camps and more than 280 baseball games
per year including youth , high school , college , American Legion and other adult baseball leagues , semipro games and the MLB Hall of Fame Game . SFM
