ACCESSING THE ARCHIVES
January / February 1986
In this retrospective , we examine historic issues of SportsTurf magazine , predecessor to SportsField Management magazine . In this edition of “ Accessing the Archives ,” we look back at the January / February 1986 issue of SportsTurf , the cover of which featured the 16th hole at Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club , Jackson Hole , Wyoming .
While a golf course might seem an odd choice for the cover , as mentioned in previous installments , at its inception SportsTurf was not the official publication of STMA , and at the time covered “ stadiums , resorts , golf courses and athletic facilities .”
The January / February 1986 cover was tied to the lead feature on “ The Maintenance Link Between Athletic Fields and Golf Turf .” In the cover story , Golf Course Architect Dr . Michael J . Hurdzan urged golf course superintendents and athletic field managers to exchange their knowledge of turf to help each other conquer compaction , intense wear and inadequate construction specifications .
“ One of the most important questions we can ask today is what can the golf course superintendent and the athletic field manager do to help each other ? Certainly , there is much for each to share with the other that might make an important difference to the future of sports turf management overall ,” Hurdzan wrote . “ The best place to start is to examine the goals and purposes the golf course superintendent or athletic field manager has for his particular turfgrass installation , and then compare and contrast the management techniques used to achieve them .”
Also in the issue , Rutgers University Turf Specialist Dr . Henry Indyk wrote about “ Common Mistakes in Sports Turf Management .” According to Indyk , failure of natural turf to provide the aesthetics for the spectator and a safe , firm surface for the players can be linked to improper specifications , enforcement of specifications , improper or inadequate maintenance after successful establishment , abuse in field use , provision for inadequate facilities and provision for surface drainage only .
