The Brentsville Turfgrass Program strives to maintain the country ’ s best natural grass playing surfaces through hard work and dedication to their craft of sports field management . The students in this program are the most dedicated young men and women who aim to manage their fields at the standards of professional sports fields .
Our playing surface is the best in the country because of our students ’ passion for ensuring the safety and playability of our playing surface for their friends and fellow student-athletes . Brentsville students learn the cultural and industry practices necessary to provide the safest playing surfaces through hands-on learning . Students are empowered to take ownership of their work , creating a greater sense of pride and a stronger work ethic . As the next generation of sports field managers , the students conduct all field preparation .
Brentsville District High School is in northern Virginia and is in the heart of the transition zone , which provides a unique challenge and learning experience for our students . From the stress of freezing temperatures in the winter to the hot and humid summers , we are tasked with developing innovative ways to manage extreme conditions .
Management practices are adapted each year based on the needs of the field using different diagnostic tools — from moisture readings to soil testing . These include intensive cultural practices of aerating , verticutting , and moisture management of infield skin . Multiple Certified Sports Field Managers have described our field as the best high school natural grass playing surface they have ever witnessed . Collegiate coaches tout the high quality of our playing surface , often claiming it exceeds that of their own collegiate field .
As all sports field managers understand , each day brings its own unique trials . Our students learn firsthand the importance of critical thinking and problem solving through collaborative efforts to create a plan and execute it at high efficiency . The Brentsville Turfgrass Program cultivates the next generation of industry leaders who will further the profession .
