Chris Ball , CSFM , wrote an article for the May 2022 issue of SportsField Management on the topic of sun safety and skin cancer prevention . In the article , Chris shared his personal story regarding sunrelated skin damage , as well as tips for sun safety .
The article was well received by our audience , but I will be honest that I didn ’ t do anything proactive as a result . I didn ’ t schedule a visit with a dermatologist , and I didn ’ t run out and buy a new bucket hat or Ultraviolet Protection Factor ( UPF ) clothing . After all , even though I am a fair-skinned man of German and Irish descent , I am also an editor who sits in front of a computer all day . I am indoors more than 90 % of the time . When I go to the beach or on a hike or just out to do yard work , I spray on some Banana Boat and go .
So , no , I didn ’ t give a ton of thought and consideration to Chris ’ article . But I have given a lot of thought to it more recently . During a routine annual physical earlier this year , my doctor did the typical rundown asking if I had any areas of concern . Almost as an afterthought , I told him about a dry patch of skin on my face . He took one look at it and immediately sent me to a dermatologist .
The dermatologist removed two areas of concern for biopsy . Thankfully , the results came back benign , but the 10 days waiting for results were no fun . On a follow-up visit , the dermatologist froze off two more age spots and got me set up with a skin care routine . I ’ m also now on a schedule to be checked every six months .
I have since purchased high-quality mineral-based sunscreen , nighttime skin moisturizer and dermatologistrecommended body wash , as well as UPF clothing and hats .
I share all of this because I wish I had taken Chris ’ story to heart and gotten checked earlier . It could have saved a lot of stress and potentially future issues . I ’ m now hoping I can help encourage more people to think about sun safety and proper skin care .
As we head into the summer months , I urge you to visit the CDC ’ s website with tips regarding sun safety and skin cancer prevention ( https :// www . cdc . gov / cancer / skin / basic _ info / sun-safety . htm ).
