JOHN MASCARO ’ S PHOTO QUIZ
ANSWER
From page 17
During spring preparation of this softball fi eld , the recreation / maintenance coordinator saw a funny green look to one of his community center softball fi elds . He stated that , upon further investigation , “ We encountered new growth on the fi eld .” Apparently , someone took it upon themselves to seed Kentucky bluegrass into this softball fi eld ’ s skinned infi eld . The presence of tire tracks and the uniformity of coverage indicated that it was probably applied with a drop spreader . He is not totally sure who performed this volunteer effort ; however , his prime suspect is a particular group that asked if they could have a “ grass infi eld ” the year prior . When questioned , they did not confess . The seed must have been applied in early spring , a week or two before the municipality ’ s crew arrived at this fi eld for renovation . The crew mechanically removed the seed by skimming the top layer off . Luckily , since the seed was in the early stages of germination , not much root mass had developed . I would classify this action as vandalism , even though the responsible party fi gured they were “ helping .”
