MORE THAN GRASS WITH ALPHA JONES

Look Back Only to Move Forward

Reflecting on the past is frequently viewed as dwelling on what is behind us , but it serves as a crucial step for meaningful progress . Looking back allows us to evaluate our experiences , learn from our successes and mistakes , and bring our future actions in line with our long-term goals .
This practice is particularly vital in professional development , where understanding the journey improves our ability to effectively navigate future challenges . By revisiting the thoughts , aspirations and moments of passion — and acting on things such as registering for a significant conference or setting professional milestones — we can ensure that the insights and lessons learned continue to inform and inspire our ongoing growth . When we look back , it will motivate us to move forward .
The 2024 SFMA Conference in Daytona Beach , Florida , was a resounding success , providing an invaluable opportunity for members to network , learn and explore the latest advancements in sports field management . Reflecting on the first half of 2024 , it is important to consider what was learned during that time and ask , “ What has been integrated into the work that my team and I produce now ?”
The conference offered a range of educational sessions covering essential topics directly connected to sports field management , such as turf pathology , new paint techniques and the expanding use of technologies to perform job tasks . Additionally , sessions on worklife balance and diversity , equity and inclusion were intended to enhance our overall job performance . Think about which of those insights and tools you have successfully implemented in your daily operations . Have they made a noticeable difference ?
Professional and personal development topics designed to enhance our person can require more time and thought on how to implement and quantify the benefit . Conversational interactions will vary from day to day , and will be different with each person you encounter . It is important to stay focused on the “ why ” and “ how ” you execute these skills . Your reason for why you want to increase that skill should energize your implementation of it and challenge you to follow the steps in the process .
For those who attended sessions focused on practical applications and the latest equipment , consider whether you have been able to attain any new tools or technologies that caught your eye . If you did acquire something new , has the new equipment improved the efficiency and quality of your facilities ?
The conference also provided a sense of community . It was a chance to share experiences with peers who understand the challenges of sports field management , and offered a refreshing break from the isolation that can sometimes accompany our work .
As we step into the full swing of summer , I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the recent past . Look back to fall of 2023 , when you registered to attend the SFMA 2024 Conference . What were your thoughts and aspirations at that time ?
Did you intend to sit for the Certified Sports Field Manager ( CSFM ) exam offered at the conference ? As the conference approached , did your exam preparation provide a sense of confidence and anticipation for the exam material ?
Remembering your goals and expectations from that period can help you assess how far you have come . Understanding this can guide your future professional development and help you utilize the knowledge and experiences gained .
As you continue through the second half of the year , keep leveraging the tools , connections and insights you acquired . They can significantly contribute to your success and the advancement of the sports field management industry . Use them yourself , and discuss them with coworkers , your supervisor and others who may have different responsibilities . With the right intentions , this look back could energize the days in front of you and give direction to the path you take in Palm Springs , California , the fantastic location for the 2025 SFMA Conference & Exhibition .
