JOHN MASCARO ’ S PHOTO QUIZ
ANSWER
From page 17
This large , irregular brown area is something that has happened to most of us at one time or another . While applying a 20-0-5 fertilizer , the employee reported that while he was operating a ride-on powered spreader , the opening got stuck closed . When the operator stopped the machine to unjam it , the fertilizer just started pouring out and he could not get it closed fast enough . The operator , while wearing gloves , thought that he had “ picked up enough of the spilled fertilizer by hand ” that it wouldn ’ t be a problem . Obviously , he did not get quite enough , as you can see by the burned turf . By the time the damage was noticed , and the mistake subsequently admitted , it was too late to send him out with the shop vacuum . The area was scarifi ed and reseeded . It was also reported that this operator is typically a great and reliable member of the team , so it all worked out as a learning opportunity .
