SFMA Turfgrass Math Resource Center
The new Sports Field Management Association( SFMA) Turfgrass Math Resource Center is a one-stop hub designed to bring together valuable resources and calculations from throughout the industry— all in one easy-to-find place.
“ Turfgrass math is critical for successful athletic field management from figuring the right amount of nitrogen to apply for peak growth to the correct amount of herbicide to control weeds but not harm the turfgrass,” said SFMA Immediate Past President Adam Thoms, Ph. D.“ Also knowing the correct amounts of products with turfgrass math can help you stretch your budget.”
According to SFMA, turfgrass mathematics is a vital aspect of sports field management. A thorough understanding of mathematics will aid field layout, topdressing, irrigation, fertilization, pesticide application, and economics.
This turfgrass mathematics short course includes the following modules: Module 1: Area and Volume Calculations Module 2: Dry Fertilizer Calculations Module 3: Liquid Fertilizer Calculations Module 4: Pesticide Calculations
Each module contains an introductory write-up, a problem set, one or two videos illustrating how to complete the problem set, and a review quiz. The videos that are included with several of the modules work through the same problem set using different methods. Dr. Nick Christians demonstrates the use of proportions( or ratios) to calculate turfgrass math problems; and Dr. Quincy Law utilizes dimensional analysis to calculate the same problems. These two methods perform the same calculations, but the thought process, approach, and setup vary.
