From small high school stadiums to large multi-sport complexes, utility task vehicles( UTVs) play a critical role in keeping operations moving. Crews depend on them every day to transport equipment, move staff, and support everything from field prep to event setup.
As facilities grow, selecting the right vehicle becomes more than a routine purchase. It becomes a decision that shapes productivity and long-term operating costs. The good news is that today’ s commercial platforms offer more flexibility than ever, making it easier to match vehicles to the way a facility works.
1. HOW WILL THE VEHICLE BE USED?
The most important question is also the simplest. What will the vehicle need to do every day?
For smaller facilities, a compact vehicle may be all that is needed. These are ideal for routine tasks such as carrying tools, handling light maintenance work, and moving staff quickly across the property. Their smaller size also helps protect turf and allows for better maneuverability in tight spaces.
Larger facilities have very different demands. University campuses, municipal complexes, and tournament venues require vehicles that can handle continuous use throughout the day. This often includes hauling materials, towing equipment, and transporting multiple crew members across long distances.
When choosing a vehicle, consider its impact on turf quality and particularly playing surfaces. Vehicle weight, tire selection, and ground pressure can significantly affect natural turf conditions, particularly during wet conditions or periods of field recovery. Facilities should consider how frequently vehicles will be driven on playing surfaces, and look for configurations designed to minimize turf disturbance.
2. GAS VS. ELECTRIC
Gas vehicles still have a place, especially for extreme towing needs or in areas where access to charging infrastructure is limited. But for many facilities, the conversation has shifted toward lithium electric technology.
Advances in lithium battery technology have made electric vehicles a practical and often preferred option. Today’ s systems deliver the range and performance needed for a full day of work, while also simplifying maintenance and reducing operating costs. Gas-powered vehicles often have a lower initial purchase cost, but lithiumpowered vehicles eliminate many of the routine maintenance tasks associated with gas-powered vehicles or older battery technologies, with no battery watering, fewer moving parts, and less wear over time. These advantages can add up over time, reducing maintenance demands and lowering overall operating costs.
3. CONSIDER NOISE AND THE OVERALL ENVIRONMENT
Noise is often overlooked, but it plays a big role in day-to-day operations.
Electric vehicles operate much more quietly than gas-powered options. That allows crews to work during practices, games, and events without disrupting athletes or guests. It also creates a better overall experience for everyone on-site.
There are environmental benefits as well. Electric UTVs produce zero tailpipe emissions during operation, helping facilities reduce their impact while supporting broader sustainability goals. This becomes especially valuable indoors. Because there is no exhaust, electric vehicles can safely be used inside field houses and other enclosed spaces. Non-marking tires can even allow for use on indoor playing surfaces.
4. LOOK AT TECHNOLOGY AND CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS
Modern UTVs are no longer just about getting from point A to point B. Many now include built-in technology that helps facilities operate more efficiently.
Fleet management systems allow facilities to track vehicle usage, limit vehicle access to authorized personnel, and monitor activity across large properties. That level of oversight can improve accountability and help protect valuable assets.
Customization is just as important. No two facilities operate the same way, which is
why having the ability to tailor vehicles makes a difference. If you have specific needs at your facility, look for a vehicle that offers accessories that allow you to outfit the unit to meet your needs. If you have very specialized requirements, seek a manufacturer that offers custom-built vehicle solutions for specific applications, such as medical vehicles, wheelchair-accessible shuttles, or vehicles with enclosed cargo boxes.
5. DON’ T OVERLOOK SUPPORT AND LONG-TERM VALUE
The vehicle itself is only part of the decision. Long-term support can have just as much impact on overall value.
A strong dealer network, access to trained technicians, and reliable warranty coverage all play a role in keeping vehicles running and controlling costs over time. These factors often become even more important as fleets grow.
FINDING THE RIGHT FIT
There is no one-size-fits-all solution when selecting a UTV. Every sports facility has its own set of needs, priorities and challenges. The right UTV is not necessarily the biggest, fastest or most feature-rich option, but the vehicle that aligns with a facility ' s operational demands, staffing needs, and long-term goals. By evaluating usage requirements, powertrain options, technology, customization opportunities and service support, sports facility managers can make an investment that addresses their specific needs and delivers value for years to come.
