ACCESSING THE ARCHIVES
In this retrospective , we examine historic issues of SportsTurf magazine , predecessor to SportsField Management magazine . In this edition of Accessing the Archives , we delve into the 1993 editions of SportsTurf .
The January issue featured a profile of SportsTurf “ Man of the Year ” Roger Bossard . The article detailed how Bossard helped design the field for the new Comiskey Park , which opened in 1991 . It also examined the Bossard family legacy and the early influences that shaped Roger ’ s career .
The January issue also recapped the fourth annual STMA Conference , which , according to the article , hosted 150 professionals .
In February 1993 , the magazine profiled the construction of Oso Viejo Park Lower Tier in Mission Viejo , California , which was the site for the 1994 World Cup practice fields and training facility for the U . S . Soccer Team . Mission Viejo was picked because of its moderate climate , and its proximity to Pasadena , California , site of the World Cup Final .
The March issue was all about professionalism in the industry , and included a profile of Murray Cook and his crew at West Palm Beach Municipal Stadium , as well as a profile Stephen Guise , turf track superintendent at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia , California . In fact , the horse racing track at Santa Anita was the cover shot for this particular issue .
Prep work at Oriole Park at Camden Yards was highlighted in the April 1993 issue . “ Because
the stadium is only used for baseball , we have a good window of time to prep the field for the next season ,” said Head Groundskeeper Paul Zwaska . “ In fact , we start immediately after the season has ended in fall to prepare for spring .”
The May issue , meanwhile , examined sod installation , turfgrass renovation , water quality , mole crickets and more .
June 1993 was all in on previewing the 1994 World Cup . Sod for games at the Pontiac ( Mich .) Silverdome was trucked more than 2,000 miles from California . Once in Pontiac , it underwent labor-intensive preparations in April 1993 , and was laid out in a large rectangle where it was to sit until mid-June . Then , the field was disassembled and moved inside the Pontiac Silverdome . One game was played on it in 1993 — an exhibition match between Germany and England . Then , after 15 days indoors , the turf was taken outside and stored for 11 months . In June of 1994 , four World Cup Soccer games would be played on the natural turf inside the Silverdome . “ A few years ago , I made up a list of personal
