This photo dates back to Sept 16 , 2019 , and is the reason there are no longer fi reworks launched from the sidelines before , during or after NFL games . Prior to the start of a game between the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts — just following the pregame introductions and the national anthem — the players were lined up on the fi eld for the kickoff . Suddenly , the equipment used for pyrotechnics during the pregame festivities burst into fl ames . It occurred near the 5-yard line on the sideline near the tunnel that leads to the Titans ’ locker room . Field staff , along with a fi refi ghter who was stationed on the sideline , acted quickly and extinguished the fi re , which luckily resulted in no injuries . The sports fi eld director had been at the opposite end of the fi eld , and arrived on the scene within 30 seconds . The fi re lasted about 1 minute but was quite intense ( there is video of the incident on YouTube ). The head offi cial asked if the game needed to be delayed and the sports fi eld director said no because the damage was behind the sideline border and a full repair would take at least 90 minutes . A representative from the NFL league offi ce was at the game and agreed . The crew sprayed water on the area and threw a light dusting of sand on top to hopefully give it a little traction since all the grass was gone . The game started on time , and , after the game , the damaged area was removed and the area was resodded .
