ENGINE TUNING
Once airflow and exhaust characteristics change, engine calibration becomes increasingly important. Electronic fuel-injected snowmobiles can often benefit from revised engine mapping that adjusts fuel delivery and ignition timing to match the added performance modifications.
A proper calibration can improve throttle response, optimize the power curve, and help the engine take advantage of your changes. It can also prevent the engine from operating with an inappropriate fuel mixture. Riders should use proven calibration equipment and software intended for their particular sled rather than relying on generic settings.
Altitude is another important consideration. Air density decreases as elevation increases, which affects how an engine performs. Mountain riders should pay close attention to calibration recommendations for the elevations where they normally ride.
CLUTCHING AND GEARING
Horsepower is only useful if the snowmobile’ s drivetrain can put it to the track effectively. Clutching is therefore one of the most important parts of a performance setup.
Changes to clutch weights, springs, helix components, and related parts can alter how quickly the engine reaches its power band and how it responds to changing loads. Proper clutch calibration can make a stock sled feel considerably faster without changing the engine itself. Gearing can also influence accel-
