Andy’ s Bar in Seney
Back at the house that evening, the sled stories gave way to another important tradition: cards. Euchre is our game of choice, and things can get fiercely competitive around the table. We laughed and told stories from rides over the past decade. Those evenings together have become just as important as the riding itself.

LAKE SUPERIOR & A LONG HIKE
Sunday morning greeted us with another bitterly cold start, but at least the sun was shining. The plan was to ride west to Marquette and back. We followed Trail 8 toward Gwinn before heading north. Riding across Marquette Mountain offered some
TRAIL CONDITIONS
The Upper Peninsula trail system around Wetmore and Munising is generally some of the most consistent in the Midwest, but conditions can change quickly with lake-effect weather off Lake Superior. Trails are typically well-groomed“ A” routes early in the day, especially near high-traffic corridors. However, expect sections of chop and hardpack by afternoon, especially on busy weekends. Layout varies from tight wooded twisties near Shingleton and Seney to faster sweeping lake runs near Grand Marais.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
The ideal snowmobiling window in Michigan’ s Upper Peninsula typically runs from mid-January through late February, when snow depth is most reliable and trail systems are fully groomed. Early January can be hit or miss depending on lake-effect storms, while March often brings warming temps and softer trails, especially near southern routes toward Manistique. Weather is highly variable— expect sub-zero mornings, lake-effect snow squalls, and occasional high wind advisories off Lake Superior. Cell service becomes spotty once outside larger towns.
TRAIL FOOD
Food stops are a core part of riding the U. P. loop system, with several iconic rider-friendly locations. In Shingleton, The Bear’ s Den is a classic stop for hearty lunches and quick service right off Trail 41. In Seney, Andy’ s Seney Bar is a mustvisit, known for its wings, pizza, and warm, welcoming atmosphere. Just next door, Mater’ s Stop-N-Go is a key fuel and snack point before heading deeper into trail country. In Grand Marais, local diners and cafes offer solid burgers and hot breakfasts that feel especially good after riding along Lake Superior on Trail 89. Munising also provides reliable food options near Trail 8 access points. Across the region, expect comfort food— burgers, pizza, chili, and fry baskets.
