Snowmobiling Michigan’ s Upper Peninsula:
Ten Years of Trails and Traditions
BY MARTY MEYER
For over a decade a group of friends have made an annual pilgrimage north in late January or early February, chasing snow and making memories on the trails of northern Wisconsin and Michigan’ s Upper Peninsula( U. P.). What started as a simple guys’ trip has grown into a tradition built around laughter, stories, breakdowns, cold mornings, and miles of great riding. As we’ ve learned over the years, it’ s not really about the sleds or the destination— it’ s about the people you share the ride with.
The idea for the trip was formed during a difficult season of my life. In 2015, I was diagnosed with cancer. While going through treatment I started talking with my cousin Lance and my friend Mark Rosacker about doing a snowmobile trip once I got healthy again. I grew up riding dirt bikes, 3-wheelers, and snowmobiles
but hadn’ t been on a sled in years. That first trip finally happened in January 2016, when nine of us headed to Hayward, Wisconsin. We had a blast, and from that point on, the annual ride became a tradition.
Over the years, the cast of characters has included cousins, brothers, college roommates, and lifelong friends. This year’ s crew totaled six: myself; my cousin Lance; my college roommate Andy from Iowa; my cousin Nick from Illinois; my cousin Chad from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and my brother Roger from Owings Mills, Maryland.
Our destination for 2026 was Wetmore, Michigan. We rolled into town late Friday evening and stayed our first night at the Pictured Rocks Inn. Everyone was eager to get riding the next morning, but Mother Nature had other ideas.
