GPS navigation is useful for following routes, finding fuel and lodging, as well as tracking progress, but batteries can die and electronics can fail. Carry a backup power source and consider a paper map as a fallback. Share your itinerary with someone who isn’ t on the trip, and agree on check-in times. In remote areas, a satellite communicator can provide an additional layer of safety when cellular service disappears or is intermittent.
PLAN FOR THE UNEXPECTED
Weather, trail closures, and mechanical problems can change a day’ s plans quickly. Check trail reports and forecasts each morning, and identify alternate routes or overnight stops when possible. Be sure to carry emergency supplies appropriate for the conditions, including extra insulation, food, water, and a way to signal for help. An emergency shelter, such as a tent and sleeping bag, is also a good idea. Establish a group riding plan, agree on regrouping points, and make sure everyone knows the route.
LEAVE ROOM FOR THE GOOD STUFF
Don’ t schedule every minute or mile. Some of the best moments on a saddlebag tour happen when you stop at a small-town diner, discover a scenic overlook, or spend an extra hour swapping stories with other riders. Build flexibility into the itinerary, keep expectations realistic, and remember that the goal is to enjoy the ride. With a dependable sled, a sensible route, and a little preparation, the miles between destinations can become the best part of the trip.
