THE FORKS AREA, MAINE
SNOWMOBILING AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL
Tucked in the Upper Kennebec Valley of western Maine, The Forks sits at the crossroads of one of the richest snowmobile trail networks in the Northeast, right at the center of the state’ s 14,000-mile Interconnecting Trail System( ITS). Riders based here aren’ t just near a trail; they’ re at a hub, where ITS routes 86, 87, 88, and 89 all come together.
From The Forks, trails fan out in every direction. Head north on ITS 87 and you’ ll climb Coburn Mountain, home to the highest groomed snowmobile trail in Maine at 3,750 feet and known as the“ Peak of Maine Snowmobiling.” West along the scenic Dead River Trail( ITS 86), riders wind along the Dead River to Grand Falls, one of the state’ s most photographed backcountry waterfalls. Keep riding and it’ s roughly 35 miles to Moosehead Lake and Greenville, 45 miles north to Jackman, and about 50 miles west to Eustis, with Rangeley’ s legendary trail system within easy reach for a full day’ s loop.
It’ s a rare setup with a groomed trail out the back door and four of Maine’ s best-known riding destinations within a single tank of gas. For more than 50 years, Northern Outdoors has served as base camp for that ride, with trailside lodging, non-ethanol gas, rentals, on-site grooming, and the Kennebec River Pub & Brewery keeping riders fed, warm, and ready for the next run. A free Park and Ride lot connects directly to the Kennebec River Trail, so the season can start the moment the trailer’ s unhitched.
