CHASING THE DREAM INTO
ome adventures begin with careful planning. Others begin around a campfire, at a cabin table, or on a bar stool with a group of friends throwing around ideas that seem just a little too ambitious to ever happen.
Our trip around Lake Superior started much the same way.
More than a decade ago, during one of our annual snowmobile weekends in northern Wisconsin, someone pointed out that we had only ridden 150 miles during the entire trip. Between breakdowns, repairs, questionable decision-making, and the usual distractions that come with a group of friends sharing a winter cabin, we had spent almost as much time wrenching as we had riding.
Sometime during that conversation, an idea emerged:“ What if we ride all the way around Lake Superior?” The response was immediate.“ You’ re dreaming.” Maybe we were, but over the next several years, that dream refused to fade.
What started as a wild idea slowly became a project. Maps were studied and routes were explored. Stories from riders who had attempted similar journeys were collected. What initially looked like a straightforward circle around one of North America’ s greatest lakes turned out to be a complicated puzzle of trail systems, border crossings, remote wilderness, fuel availability, and changing snow conditions.
