WEST Arizona “ Arizona at Altitude ” by Tim Kessel ( April 2020 )

Arizona ’ s landscape includes much more than desert . Tim Kessel ’ s ride along the 200-mile-long Mogollon Rim and into the White Mountains includes dense forests , alpine lakes , deer and elk sightings , and the historic Coronado Trail . He began this three-day ride in the small town of Strawberry , tracing the Mogollon Rim before heading into the mountains and Tonto National Forest . He then headed south on the Coronado Trail for delightfully windy sections of road and through mining country to Clifton .

Virginia ’ s Alleghany Highlands offer superb riding . Nathan Cuvelier and his dad took a two-day trip to explore the area , staying in Ridgely . Their first day began with the Lake Moomaw-Humpback Bridge loop , which includes the last remaining covered humpback bridge in the U . S . and follows the natural curves of creeks through dense foliage on the way to Gathright Dam and Lake Moomaw . On Day 2 , they rode the Historic Masonic Theatre-Falling Spring Falls loop , with twisty roads and stunning valley views .

Ohio ’ s Windy 9 is a network of nine motorcycle routes that begin in Athens and wind through the rolling Appalachian foothills . EIC Greg Drevenstedt traveled to Ohio to meet up with contributing editors Eric Trow and Scott A . Williams to explore the Windy 9 . The routes crisscross each other and offer a variety of riding , allowing riders to improvise their own daily rides . They enjoyed riverside cruises , free-spirited riding on twisties , winding through farmland and woodlands , and passing through historic towns .

NORTHEAST Pennsylvania “ Pennsylvania ’ s Allegheny Plateau ” by Jamie Elvidge ( September 2024 )

To explore the area where her father grew up , Jamie Elvidge rode through Pennsylvania ’ s Allegheny Plateau . Starting from the northern border , she followed the Susquehanna River and stopped by the Starrucca Viaduct stone rail bridge . Jamie hopped onto PA Route 6 and rode it through small towns and past mom-and-pop shops . After riding through Pennsylvania ’ s Grand Canyon and visiting the Coudersport Ice Mine , she ended her journey with renewed appreciation for the area her father loved .
