take him . I thought about where he went in the more than 9,000 miles he rode it . And I wondered what led him to park the bike permanently in 1985 ( an inspection sticker indicates that was the last year the bike had been licensed ). Apparently , the original owner kept the Dream under wraps at his home for another 30-plus years until he sold it to the fellow I bought it from ( a hobbyist who only kept it long enough to bring it back to life ).
I ’ ve enjoyed having this bike in my garage over the past three years . And I ’ ve loved how this black beauty has transported my much-expanded physique back to a more svelte time . Back when a bike like this one first propelled my ( then ) 165 lb out into the first miles of my life of road riding ( and of stopping at diners to establish my fatty food habit ). Although I now look more like a circus bear atop the diminutive 305 , the little Honda transported me back to a younger version of myself ; the one that still lives inside my head but is reminded by an aging body that it is not quite so willing anymore .
So after careful consideration , I ’ m giving up my Dream .
To be clear , I ’ m not abandoning the dream of riding and traveling ; that ’ s become part of my personal DNA . It is the ’ 67 Dream that I ’ ve been prepping for its next owner . An oil change . A tune up . A deep cleaning . I ’ ve refinished that pair of scuffed Buco saddlebags ( although I hesitated to cover the well-earned scars ). And while it ’ s hard to give up on a Dream , there ’ s some fulfillment in imagining how it will inspire and reward someone all over again as its next chapter unfolds .
As I type the final lines of this column , I will soon step out into the garage and take a long and thoughtful last look at the ’ 67 before loading it into my trailer for its trip to meet its new owner , Stuart . And I then imagine that Stuart , in turn , will unload this gem into his own garage , where he will stare in wonder at where this Dream will take him .
That ’ s what dreams are made of . Especially when they ’ re enduring Honda Dreams .
