Earning Its Place

BRIAN ETHRIDGE
For years, conversations about new equipment and technology have often started with a simple question: Does it work?
That’ s still an important question, but for dealers, there are often other questions worth asking along the way. What does a new product or technology mean for customers? How does it change what I sell? And what should I consider before deciding whether it makes sense for my dealership?
You’ ll see those questions addressed throughout this issue of OPE + Landscape.
For battery-powered equipment, the conversation is moving beyond whether batteries can deliver enough power or runtime. Faster charging, longer battery life, battery management and compatibility across equipment platforms are becoming increasingly important, shifting the conversation from individual tools to complete systems. For dealers, that means helping customers consider how a battery platform fits their needs and the equipment they already own.
We’ re seeing a similar progression with autonomous equipment. I recently spent several weeks using an autonomous mower, which gave me a firsthand look at both the potential and limitations of the technology. It handled some challenging terrain impressively, while setup, mapping and certain mowing conditions still required patience and attention.
For dealers, that distinction matters. New technology doesn’ t have to be perfect to create an opportunity, but understanding where it works well, who it’ s right for and what customers should expect can be just as important as knowing what the machine can do.
The equipment business has always required dealers to balance what customers want with what makes sense for the dealership. That means looking at more than the specifications of a machine. Price, performance, serviceability, customer expectations and whether it’ s a product you’ re proud to sell all become part of the decision.
And sometimes the answer isn’ t about adopting something new at all. It may be recognizing that a familiar product still makes the most sense for a particular customer or finding a different way to approach a changing need. Knowing when something is worth adding— and when it isn’ t— is part of what makes a good dealership valuable. Every new product or technology has to earn its place.
That’ s one of the things I hope we continue to explore in OPE + Landscape: not simply what’ s new, but what deserves your attention. There will always be new products, new technologies and new ideas competing for a place in the market. Our job is to help you sort through them and determine what matters to you and your customers.
