Batteries are getting lighter, charging faster and lasting longer

or years, one question has hovered over battery-powered outdoor power equipment: Can it replace gas? Today, that question is evolving.
As battery-powered equipment continues gaining traction among commercial landscapers, arborists and municipalities, manufacturers are no longer focused solely on adding more runtime or increasing power output. The conversation has expanded to include faster charging, longer battery life, fleet management and compatibility across an entire lineup of equipment.
Those themes were on display during a recent Stihl media event in Saratoga Springs, New York, where the company showcased its new AllPro battery system through a series of hands-on demonstrations. While attendees tested everything from string trimmers and backpack blowers to chainsaws, hedge trimmers, mowers and augers, the tools themselves often became secondary to the technology powering them.

The conversation is changing

Not long ago, battery-powered equipment was often viewed as a niche product best suited for homeowners, municipalities or noise-sensitive areas. Professional landscape contractors, meanwhile, continued asking the same questions: Will it last all day? Will it deliver enough power? What happens when the battery dies halfway through a job?
Those questions haven ' t disappeared, but manufacturers are approaching them differently.
Rather than simply building larger batteries, companies are investing in charging infrastructure and battery management systems designed to keep crews working throughout the day.
During the event, Stihl repeatedly returned to that point. Company officials said they believe that fast charging may ultimately matter more than adding another 10 or 15 minutes of runtime if batteries can be rotated through chargers while crews continue working. According to the company, its new AL 1602 MO high-speed charger can bring the AllPro AP 300.0 P battery to an 80 % charge in about 10 minutes and fully recharge it in roughly 20 minutes.
That charging strategy is supported by the technology inside the batteries themselves. The AllPro batteries use tabless cell technology, which the company says improves energy flow and reduces heat buildup, helping enable faster charging, more consistent power delivery and longer battery life.
The result reflects a broader shift in battery development. Rather than focusing solely on extending runtime, manufacturers are placing equal emphasis on reducing downtime and keeping crews productive throughout the workday.

Building an ecosystem

Another trend becoming increasingly apparent is that battery platforms are growing beyond individual tools.
Throughout the demonstrations, product managers discussed compatibility as frequently as they discussed performance. Whether the conversation centered on a blower, hedge trimmer, pole saw or chainsaw, it eventually came back to the same topic: one battery system powering an entire fleet.
For contractors, that ' s an important consideration. Investing in battery-powered equipment often means investing in chargers, spare batteries and supporting infrastructure as much as the tools themselves.
Recognizing that concern, Stihl emphasized that the new AllPro batteries will remain compatible with existing AP system equipment while older AP batteries can continue powering newer tools. That backward compatibility allows contractors to upgrade equipment over time without replacing an entire battery inventory.
Manufacturers are also putting more emphasis on battery weight and longevity. Stihl highlighted its 2-pound AllPro AP 100.0 P battery for handheld equipment, noting that reducing weight can help minimize operator fatigue during long workdays. The company also said its Performance Series batteries are designed for up to 3,000 charge cycles— roughly 12 to 15 years of service for crews charging once per workday. While real-world battery life will vary based on how equipment is used and maintained, extending battery lifespan could improve the overall return on investment for contractors considering battery-powered equipment.

Durability still matters

Battery technology may be advancing rapidly, but durability remains one of the biggest questions for commercial users.
Equipment spends long days riding in trailers, working in extreme temperatures and operating in rain, dust and debris. Batteries have to withstand those same conditions.
Rather than relying on presentations alone, Stihl demonstrated several of those scenarios during the event.
One battery was removed from a freezer and immediately installed in a chainsaw before making several cuts. Another demonstration involved batteries tumbling inside a rotating cement mixer before being pulled out and used without an issue.
The demonstrations were intended to highlight the platform ' s ability to operate in temperatures ranging from minus 4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, along with its IPX5- rated weather resistance and rugged construction, though long-term durability will ultimately be measured by contractors using the equipment every day.

Incremental improvements across the lineup

While the batteries took center stage, the event also highlighted a range of updates across the company ' s professional equipment lineup.
Battery-powered trimmers, brush cutters and edgers featured updated controls, adjustable handles and LED displays. Backpack blowers incorporated dual-battery configurations that allow operators to use a single battery for lighter cleanup work or add a second battery when additional runtime is needed. Pole saws and hedge trimmers emphasized lighter weight, improved cooling and greater adjustability, while the KombiSystem continued to showcase the flexibility of powering multiple attachments with a single powerhead. Tree care equipment also reflected the broader battery push. Stihl previewed its upcoming MSA 260 C-O chainsaw, expected later this year, while also demonstrating its updated Hexa chain technology. Although neither announcement centered exclusively on batteries, both illustrated how manufacturers are continuing to refine the overall user experience rather than focusing on one headline feature.

What it means for the industry

Battery-powered equipment isn ' t replacing gas overnight, nor is it expected to.
Many commercial contractors continue relying on gas-powered equipment for demanding, all-day applications while integrating battery-powered handheld tools where they make the most sense. But one takeaway from the event was difficult to ignore. The discussion surrounding battery-powered equipment is becoming less about proving that it works and more about improving how crews use it. Charging speed, battery lifespan, compatibility and fleet management are increasingly becoming part of the purchasing conversation alongside power, weight and runtime.
For dealers, that shift presents both an opportunity and a challenge. Selling batterypowered equipment increasingly means selling an entire system rather than a single tool. Contractors evaluating battery platforms are asking not only how a tool performs today, but how that investment will fit into their fleet several years down the road.
As battery technology continues to mature, those questions may become just as important as horsepower or cutting speed. If the latest equipment introductions are any indication, manufacturers are already designing with that future in mind.
