DIGITAL RETAILING
What your store should expect from payment and digital retailing tools
By Hayley Hollen and Sarah Hoang, Dealer Spike
The customer journey is increasingly starting online, where buyers compare equipment and pricing before visiting a dealership. Dealer Spike explores that shift in The State of the Dealer: 2026, a report based on observed behavior across more than 6,800 dealerships and service centers.
That changes the job of your payment system. It is not the back-office step that closes a sale anymore. It is part of how buyers find you, size you up and decide whether you are worth the drive.
Buyers do not shop in a straight line. They circle. They research across brands, compare, leave, come back and loop in a spouse or business partner before they commit. One of our customers said it plainly in the report:
Price transparency is the baseline, not a bonus
“ Request a Quote” is still the most-submitted form on most dealer sites, for one simple reason: price is the first question a buyer has. Hide it behind a form and you get the worst of both worlds. Tire-kickers fill it out just to fish for a number and serious buyers who will not wait for a callback go buy from the store that showed them.
The State of the Dealer report found dealers using digital retailing tactics such as on-page payment and pricing estimates generated 47.9 % more high-quality leads
than those that did not. Letting a shopper run a payment, look at financing or start a purchase step on the listing does not give the deal away. It tells you who is serious and hands your team a better lead. Your store keeps hours. Your buyers don’ t. More than half of dealership website activity happens after you have locked the doors. The report puts it at 54 % of shopping after hours, most of it on a phone. The buyer pricing equipment at 9 p. m. cannot call your finance desk. If your site cannot hand them a payment estimate, a financing path or a way to reserve the unit right then, they stall until a competitor closes the gap.
That is the whole case for payment and digital retailing tools that run whether you are open or closed: payment estimates, financing pre-qualification, online reservation, purchase steps. They are not bells and whistles. They are coverage for the hours when most of the shopping happens.
AI didn’ t kill the fundamentals. It raised the price of getting them wrong.
Every dealer is asking the same question about AI, so let us be straight about it: AI is not replacing the basics. It is punishing the stores that ignore them. Shoppers now lean on AI tools to summarize and narrow their options before they ever click into a site, and those tools reward listings that are complete, consistent and easy to verify. If your pricing fields are a mess or your payment info is missing, you do not just lose the sale. You can lose the discovery entirely.
Used right, AI strips out the manual friction around the deal: flagging when a past buyer is ready to come back, drafting clean follow-up, keeping pricing and incentives accurate at scale. What it will not do is fix a broken process. AI amplifies what you already have, good or bad. A reliable, accurate, connected payment system gets sharper with AI on top. A sloppy one just fails faster.

What good looks like going into the second half of 2026
Price and payment context live on the unit page, not behind a gate, so buyers can qualify themselves early.
Estimates, trade value, financing and reservation work on mobile and after hours, with no staffer in the loop.
Pricing and inventory fields stay consistent everywhere, so buyers and AI summaries can both trust them.
Every inquiry and started deal lands with a real person. No silent failures between online and the store.
Reporting matches what your team feels on the floor, so you know the tools are moving deals, not just looking busy.
Bottom line
OPE demand is seasonal and the competition is real, and 2026 will reward execution over experimentation. Payment and digital retailing tools have quietly become a discovery and trust signal, not a transaction step. Put clear pricing and an easy next step in front of buyers early and keep those options available around the clock to help turn existing traffic into qualified buyers. That is what good looks like, and any dealer willing to tighten the loop can get there.
