www.fueloilnews.com | FUEL OIL NEWS | JULY 2018 35 SCENES FROM (SIMULATED) FIRES T he Propane Gas Association of New England trained firefight- ers and propane personnel at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow. "We teach them to mitigate leaks—in a tank, a truck rollover, and in residential tanks from a barbecue grill all the way up to a thousand- gallon tank," said Byron A. Breda, safety, training director of PGANE, which is based in Epsom, N.H. "And we teach them to operate together, which is the way it works if an incident should happen," Breda added. Forty-five propane personnel and firefighters attended the three days of training from May 15-17, more than half of them propane personnel, Breda says. The class-and-field instruction is "intense," Breda says. "There's no slowing down." Breda retired as a lieutenant in charge of the hazardous materials team of the fire department in Nashua, N.H. "Propane guys wouldn't normally go in and try to shut the valve down," Breda said, "but [in the training we] let the propane personnel get on the lines with firefighters and go in and feel how hot it is and experi- ence what's going on. It's quite an overwhelming thing for those guys to do."—Stephen Bennett l F O N Above and top right: Simulated situations, but real flames.
