Back on the trail with full tanks and satiated stomachs , our snow turned to rain . Staying entirely on the trail , we cruised at a more urgent pace as the precipitation became driving : Valley views were shrouded-over in thick fog as we headed back toward the trailhead .
While the routes are wide in most places , riders must constantly keep watch for crossing animals . This late in such a snowy winter , moose are tired and often resting on the trails . With a cloud of steam puffing out its nostrils . we encountered a large , fast moving moose at the end of a large straightaway . We hung back a good distance as it followed the trail for a quarter mile uphill before dipping off into the woods .
Around here , everybody has moose or bear stories to share , and the theme is often the same : stay back and stay alive . It is amazing to come upon a moose in the wild but they can be extremely aggressive .
SILVER COUNTRY
Day 2 promised to be the most adventurous leg of the Idahoan excursion . Jerry stayed back , and Mark , Yogi and I drove 40 miles east on I-90 to Kellogg to check out the modern Silver Mountain Resort and ski hill where we ’ d be spending the night .
