From a summertime ATV trip a few years ago , and this year ’ s lateseason snowmobile tour , it ’ s clear to me that Idaho boosters should never mention the potato again . When somebody says Idaho , your brain should conjure images of the state ’ s verdant forests , winding mountain trails , rushing streams , majestic wildlife , crystal blue waters , interesting towns and friendly people .
We began our journey in Coeur d ’ Alene , the state ’ s second largest metropolitan area and arguable one of America ’ s most beautiful cities . It ’ s home to about 40,000 , with a charming and compact downtown district up against the shores of Lake Coeur d ’ Alene . It is one of the highest elevated lakes on the continent , and the entire scene is surrounded by gradually rolling mountains that beg to be explored .

Idaho , our nation ’ s 43rd state , is unique among its neighbors . In contrast to the rocky peaks of Wyoming , the otherworldly monoliths of Utah and the
